Last year when I was going through the most difficult time in my life, one of my dearest friends and her lovely daughter, hand-delivered a little box of sunshine to me, one evening. I cannot tell you how much this simple gesture meant, and with perfect timing. It was a JOY to receive!
It wasn’t only the yellow-themed box and what was in it (which was all fantastic!) that made me smile… but it was the idea that I was being thought of, that truly lifted my spirits. And though it was well over a year and a half ago when I was given the box, I was reminded of it this morning when I took a bath. There on the edge of the tub was a small bottle of lemon essential oil…and all this time later…it still matters, and still warmed my heart. It made me realize how much a gift can keep on giving, for a long time to come.
I remember her saying it was an idea she saw on Pinterest. She also said it was fun filling the box with yellow themed items (hence the sunshine), and it got me thinking… I wonder who I could make a box of sunshine for? Whose spirit could I lift with this little box and simple gesture? And could I make it something I could do on a regular basis…my go-to item when someone needs a gentle reminder that they matter? It doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive; just an act of love to let someone know that you are thinking of them.
One of my favorite items that came in the box was a coffee mug that I still use for my morning coffee or afternoon tea (I have a thing for coffee mugs (among other “things”) and I try and take turns using them all). That mug always makes me smile and is another reminder of how good it felt to receive the box.
My box included the following “yellow” items:
- lemon quick bread mix
- ginger candy
- lemon cookie thins
- a bath sponge
- handmade lemongrass soap
- lemon green tea
- gourmet potato chips
- a lemon themed dish towel
- you are my sunshine coffee mug
- lemon essential oil
I (obviously) would add a lemongrass candle (I know right where to get one of those! ;))
So that’s my plan. Thank you Christie & Kenna (xo, xo) and whoever came up with this “bright” idea in the first place! When I know or hear or feel that someone needs a boost to their spirit, I’m going to deliver a little box of sunshine. This could be something that could easily be done anytime I’m out shopping and see something yellow that would fit in the box. So who knows what will end up inside… it’ll be FUN figuring that out!
What would you like in your box?
